Heart of Walker
Development of the Heart of Walker will provide key services and facilities to serve the local area in line with the aspirations described in the Walker Riverside Area Action Plan. These could include:
- A new 420 place primary school
- Upgraded leisure facilities at the Lightfoot Centre
- New tree lined link between Walker Road and Lightfoot Centre
- A medium sized supermarket and five smaller retail units
- A new 'multi use' community facility
- 290 properties for sale, rent and shared ownership
- Flexible workspace and residential units
- A new public space - including a public square
It is vital that the investment people have made into the vision for Walker Riverside, and in particular the Heart of Walker, is recognised, and that new development on this site assigns prime importance to the achievement and delivery of this vision.
Throughout the process for developing the Heart of Walker from an idea to the current pre-delivery stage, the local community and support groups have been involved. Please look at the pages that tell the story of One Big Month and Placemaking.
6 weeks of public consultation has now finished on the Heart of Walker Supplementary Planning Document (SPD). The SPD adds details to the Walker Riverside Area Action Plan and describes the development proposals for the new Heart of Walker.
Residents of all ages have been getting involved in the design of public spaces for the heart of Walker. A group of young people worked with designers to learn more about public art and design. Meanwhile, a group of Walker people produced a film about what they want to see in the area.
